The Starfleet Academy Preparatory Program is a six-week course set by Starfleet Academy to ascertain the suitability of individuals applying to Starfleet Academy.

In 2371, Nog spent four days taking tests looking at stress reaction, spatial orientation and deductive reasoning overseen by Miles O'Brien in the holosuites on Deep Space 9. Although Nog trained for his stress reaction test in a runabout simulation, the actual test took place in a simulation of Deep Space 9's operations center. Later, Quark reconfigured the holosuite in a way that made Nog fail the spatial orientation test, although Rom was able to determine what Quark had done. Benjamin Sisko allowed Nog to take retake the test, which Nog successfully passed. (DS9 episode: "Facets")

Other runabout simulations that were part of the Starfleet Academy Preparatory Program were simulations of Kinzhara IV and Panhelios XVIII. (DS9 video game: Harbinger)
