Starfleet Merchant Marine Command was the operational authority for the Federation's Merchant Marine service organization.

History and specifics[]

Starfleet Merchant Marine Command's role was supervising Merchant Marine operations of enforcing interstellar law; transporting cargo and troops; providing emergency assistance; and maintaining essential infrastructure such as navigation beacons and communications arrays. (FASA RPG module: Cadet's Orientation Sourcebook)

It licensed independent trading organizations such as the UFP/ITA to conduct certain tasks, such as civilian merchant certification testing. Earning a license to pilot a private spaceship in the Federation required passing tests that were devised by Command and tested by the UFP/ITA. Trade vessels were required to be registered with Command, and Command reviewed all civilian starship application requests to have ship-mounted weaponry. (FASA RPG module: Spacelanes: The Magazine of Interstellar Trade)

Headquarters, based on Alpha Centauri, maintained a spaceport and a number of drydocks in the system. In the 2380s, Admiral Jenidox Parl was its most senior officer, supervising various vice-admirals, each of whom directed segments of the fleet. Additional HQ staff included officers, administrators, civil servants, and ministers. (Last Unicorn RPG module: The Price of Freedom)
