Steel is a metal alloy, a combination of iron and a percentage of carbon.
On Torgu-Va, the Humans had used steel in the construction of their blast doors. Commander William T. Riker and Doctor Janice Eardman noticed that the blast doors protecting the Federation Battle Station Torgu-Va did not have plasta lamination. (TNG novel: The Forgotten War)
