Steven Unverzagt was a tall, muscular, human man serving in the Federation Starfleet in the late-24th century. In the mid-2380s, the dark haired and bearded, young captain was the commanding officer of the Sovereign-class starship, USS Warspite. He was noted as being "promising", and following Starfleet tradition called his first officer "Number One".

Starfleet career[]

In September 2385, Unverzagt and the Warspite were ordered to Andor to intercept and apprehend Doctor Julian Bashir from the civilian freighter SS Parham. The overzealous captain had the Warspite fire upon the Parham while the freighter was within Andor's atmosphere - a crime, as the civilian vessel was under Andorian jurisdiction. This action earned him a reprimand from Captain Ezri Dax of the USS Aventine, and the threat of coming under fire if he did not break off his attack. Unverzagt eventually relented, telling Dax that she'd regret her actions against him and his ship.

When the Saber-class starship, USS Falchion arrived, Unverzagt ordered it to jam all incoming and outgoing transmissions from the Aventine. The Warspite then proceeded with Operation Bright Storm, a cyberwarfare operation against Andor to prevent the Andorians from obtaining the cure to their genetic reproductive crisis from Doctor Bashir. To locate Bashir, Unverzagt ordered the Falchion to create a gap in their jamming field which allowed Bashir to open a communications channel to the Aventine which the Warspite was able to trace back to him on the planet's surface.(The Fall novel: A Ceremony of Losses)

In October, Admirals Akaar and William T. Riker would consider Unverzagt as part of Ishan's close cadre of Starfleet officers - although they hoped that he was simply one of many officers "duped" by Ishan, responding patriotically to orders received direct from the President Pro Tempore. That officers like Unverzagt were ignoring the chain of command and responding to Ishan directly, rather than corresponding with Akaar and his adjutants, led Akaar to believe that Ishan had an admiral in Starfleet Command administering secret "eyes only" orders for him. (The Fall novel: Peaceable Kingdoms)

Personal life[]

Unverzagt was known as 'Zot' to his friends. However, he didn't allow any of them to serve aboard his ship. He did have a couple domesticated Earth cats. Luna & Fury were the only constant companions he had on record.

In 2385, he kept his hair slightly longer than was customary for Starfleet officers. He also maintained a well-kept beard over his strong jawline and chin. (The Fall novel: A Ceremony of Losses)
