A Swooper was a species native to the planet Phylos, they are known for their distinctively pitched shriek.

Swoopers were approximately fifteen feet long and like most life on Phylos were actually a type of plant. They were capable of flight and had root-like appendages which could be used as limbs. (ST reference: The Worlds of the Federation; TAS episode: "The Infinite Vulcan")

At one point in December of 2267, while Helen Latham was yelling at him, Daniel Latham claimed that her shriek was not unlike that of the Phylosian swooper. (TOS novel: The Case of the Colonist's Corpse)

Curiously, with the exception of Stavos Keniclius, Phylos was supposedly unknown until the USS Enterprise arrived in 2269. (TAS episode: "The Infinite Vulcan")
