how did the novel mention that the star is in the Beta Quadrant? -- Captain M.K.B. 18:02, 28 March 2007 (UTC)

It didn't directly mention it was in the Beta Quadrant no. But as the Klingon Empire is located in the Beta Quadrant, and the border (or Klingon Neutral Zone) is also located on the Federation's border with the empire in the Beta Quadrant, then their stands a very good chance that Alpha Varangis is located in the Beta Quadrant. --The Doctor 18:11, 28 March 2007 (UTC)
But many DS9 episodes have mentioned that the Klingons are an Alpha Quadrant power. It is not impossible that part of the Klingon border (where Sulu was in ST6) is in Beta Quadrant, and also possible that part of the Klingon border (as referenced in DS9) is in the Alpha Quadrant.
I don't think its a valid use of our non-canon source material to assume that everything Klingon is in the Beta Quadrant. That would be like saying that every coastal US city borders the Pacific Ocean -- its untrue because another part of the US borders a different ocean. -- Captain M.K.B. 18:14, 28 March 2007 (UTC)
Yes but the Star Trek: Star Charts has the entire Klingon Empire (and Romulan Star Empire for that matter) being located in the Beta Quadrant, and surely that is a valid licensed (hate the word non-canon) material. However, as Alpha Varangis wasn't mentioned directly in that resource, I suppose I could just list at as being somewhere in the galaxy near the Klingon Neutral Zone. --The Doctor 18:19, 28 March 2007 (UTC)
It seems like the best middle road in this case. Especially considering that Star Charts is contradictory compared to other works in other ways. If canon DS9 episodes say some of the Klingon Empire is in the Alpha Quadrant, then I then I think we should avoid changing articles about comics, novels and games to the reference book's version of things, but instead note the contradiction.
For example, the book "Enterprise The First Adventure" states the original Enterprise was "Constellation class" -- but I wouldn't go so far as to change entries about the same type of ships from the Early Voyages comic to match their contradiction. We should only classify Klingon locations mentioned in Star Charts as being Beta Q, not cross pollinate the uncertainly to other comic novel and game stars and systems. -- Captain M.K.B. 23:17, 28 March 2007 (UTC)
Yeah you're right, after making extrapolations for years its hard to just rely on whats written but I'm getting better. Looking back at the edits the Beta Quadrant reference was made by another user, but I could certainly see why that original extrapolation was made. The important thing is we have to stick to whats written in black and white. Unless the BQ is mentioned later on in the book, not got through it all yet. --The Doctor 23:21, 28 March 2007 (UTC)
