I think Boyce's rank is assumed. I don't see any reference to it in Early Voyages (including sleeve insignia in the issues which use TOS ranks), nor does a Google Books search reveal any mention of his rank in the novels in which he's appeared. --Columbia clipper 04:08, September 30, 2010 (UTC)
