The background section indicates this article is ignoring the Voyages of Imagination timeline and using another date for this book.
Why? This certainly bears discussion -- Captain MKB 22:56, April 19, 2015 (UTC)
- Having read the novel, I didn't see anything to justify disregarding the Pocket Books dating. The article claims there's an explicit reference to The Voyage Home in there but I didn't notice it (if anyone has a chapter/page reference, I'd be glad to check it out). The only pointer towards future events is that Kirk mentions wearing glasses, and it's possible that they weren't new in Wrath of Khan. Otherwise, everything seems to fit a post-TMP setting. Spock refers to Kirk as "Admiral" on occasion, which would make more sense if he's taken a voluntary (temporary?) downgrade than if he'd been demoted as a punishment. There's no sign of Chekov, which you'd expect if it was the Enterprise-A, so possibly the intention was for it to be set while he was on the Reliant. I definitely think it's up for debate.
