USS Olympic (NCC-55000) Ordinary commissioned 2372 as USS Olympic (NX-55000) A prototype for the Olympic-class

The USS Olympic was technically the first ship commissioned of the Hope-class. However the prototype was developed under the name of Olympic-class and was meant to be a long range sensor vessel for the Starfleet Science Ops, responsible for mapping space. But during space trails the ships original design proved to small for the large censor array to work efficiently. During a refit the development team extending the engineering section giving the ship its bulky look. Space trails once again proved the ships inefficiency as a long range sensor platform.

With the outbreak of the Dominion War in late 2373 the need for a new class of hospitals ship arose. At the time Starfleet Medical was still using the Angueira-class (an Oberth-class variation) hospital ships. Due to the War recourses were limited and Starfleet Medical choose to rebuild the Olympic-class prototype as a hospital ships rather then design a hole new class of starship. The large censor array was traded in for a one of stander size, a large multi deck hospital was edit in the primary hull. The shuttlebay was enlarged end equipt for the retrieval of escape pods, extra transporter capability was edit (for rapid evacuating of other vessels) the holodecks were traded in for extra cargo bays to carry medical supplies.

The recommissioned USS Olympic (NCC-55000) was lunched (49 days after her refit comments) in to active service without completing any further space trails.

The ship class name was changed from Olympic to Hope-class in hope for better times. This name change still courses wait ranging confusion sins some of the shipyards, that started to build this class, received sets of blueprints saying both Hope-class as well as Olympic-class. So some ships were mistakenly commissioned as Olympic-class.
