Talk:Val Jean

Back to page

According to Memory Alpha, Chakotay's ship didn't get a name until "Val Jean" appeared in a graphic in VOY: "Repression". However, the entry for Caretaker (novelization) here on Beta calls the ship Val Jean. Can someone who owns the novelization confirm or deny the name was used there? Or perhaps find any reference in non-canon? (FWIW, MA also notes the novel Pathways gave the ship the name Liberty, which will only confuse matters more...) --Seventy 00:40, 23 September 2006 (UTC)

Apparently, the Badlands duology gives it yet another name, the Selva. Maybe Maquis ships are like cars, in that everybody can call it whatever the heck they want, but officially it really doesn't have a name. -- Data Noh 13:37, 19 April 2007 (UTC).

In looking at my ancient notes, there is only one mention of Chakotay's ship that I wrote. It says : - "Voyager" entered The Delta Quadrant a week after "Liberty". So, it seems the novelisation partners Pathways. [User: Stripey].

I just went through the bits of Caretaker (novelization) that I figured would be likely to name the ship, and none of them did. -- Data Noh 15:03, 19 April 2007 (UTC)

Any thoughts on moving this page to Liberty (ship)? Others seem to have found that reference in the Caretaker novelization, and it is definitely in Pathways, as well as the Trek CCG, with the only Val Jean reference seemingly an okudagram in Repression. I'd say the non-canon outweighs the canon in this instance. -- Data Noh 17:00, 24 April 2007 (UTC)

You may have a point regarding Caretaker. There is every chance I may [ may ] have read Pathways before I ever read Caretaker, which would influence me using a name for the ship when I wrote that note/sentence. Just a thought. [User: Stripey].

Something I remembered that might help explain why the ship was given different names. The novel Quarantine mentions that Maquis ships often have to change their name and warp signatures to make it appear they have more ships than they really do. In the novel it was called the Spartacus. – CapnCrunch 16:40, 1 April 2008 (UTC)
