Talk:Vulcanoid

Is there any citation to substantiate this recently added statement?: "They are the second most common species in the known galaxy after humanoids." --8of5 19:54, 4 May 2008 (UTC)
- Based on some of Rainbow87's other posts, the most likely place to check would be the Star Trek: The Worlds of the Federation sourcebook. --Emperorkalan 00:34, 5 May 2008 (UTC)
So it is, however that reference seems to use Vulcanoid to refer to the species of Vulcans: "The Vulcanoid species is the second most common in the known galaxy and is considered to be the seed species of the Romulan race as well". What do you think? --8of5 14:48, 7 May 2008 (UTC)
- are they really a species? maybe we should take the middle ground and just say "the Vulcanoids" to avoid the ramifications of the word 'species' (is it more of a family of species? a genus? i'm no science major)
- also , has anyone checked the "Worlds" reference? -- Captain MKB 15:08, 7 May 2008 (UTC)
- Uh, yes, that's what the text I quite earlier today was from. Rainbow87 made an uncited addition with my first quote on May 4, Kalan suggested it might be from Worlds so I checked, it did, but the reference seemed to be talking using the world Vulcanoid to refer to the Vulcan species rather than the collection of related species we typically understand Vulcanoid to refer to today. --8of5 00:28, 8 May 2008 (UTC)
- Compounding the problem, Rainbow87 specified Vulcanoid as second "after humanoid" (which, if 8of5's quote is complete, isn't actually stated in Worlds), and "humanoid" is a general description, not a species. Not to mention the fact that both terms, humanoid and Vulcanoid, can include the other, depending on the parameters of definition one is using. I think the phrase in question should be moved into or followed by an editorial comment pointing out some of the ambiguities of that statement.--Emperorkalan 16:54, 9 May 2008 (UTC)
I've not found a bit in Worlds that explicitly says Humanoids are the most abundant, but it is implied. But yeah, I agree this info should be explained with an editorial note, which I shall add momentarily. --8of5 00:18, 10 May 2008 (UTC)
