Tam o' Shanter was a poem written by Scottish writer Robert Burns. The subject was the title character's encounter with demons and the devil in an abandoned church in Alloway.

In 2267, when Captain James T. Kirk suspected a link between Earth myths of demons and the recently encountered Furies (which resembled demons), he asked Montgomery Scott what he knew about Celtic mythology. Scott said the only folklore he knew about was the story of Tam o' Shanter's ride, and summarized it for Kirk. (TOS - Invasion! novel: First Strike)

In a fake database the crew of Deep Space 9 created in 2372, Tam o' Shanter was a member of Starfleet and the Chief of Operations on the space station. (DS9 novelization: The Way of the Warrior)
