Publisher's description
Edit
- From the back cover
- A new beginning - but the same old problems.
- Jim Kirk arrives at Starfleet Academy ready to take on whatever challenges arise. Most new beginnings mean you get to start with a clean slate, but Kirk quickly discovers that he is already infamous among his classmates. Thanks to his bravado and boasting that he'll finish the four-year program in three, they've already made up their minds about kind of rival he is ... and how they will beat him.
- The Academy's program is extremely rigorous and uncompromising. The students are the best and the brightest, and the school demands total commitment from them - physically and mentally. Kirk is ready for it all, but he didn't expect that some cadets will do anything to ensure they succeed at the Academy, no matter the cost.
- He soon finds that his best friend, McCoy, is one of the main suspects in an Academy misconduct investigation for crimes that could cost the lives of his classmates. Kirk is determined to clear McCoy's name and unmask the dark side of Academy life - before it's too late.

Background
Edit
- The book was first announced when a listing for it, as "Starfleet Academy Untitled Paperback #1", appeared on Simon and Schuster's website in January 2010. The listing suggested it, along with "Starfleet Academy Untitled Paperback #2", would be published as a trade paperback in November 2010.[1]. Rudy Josephs was listed as the author in February 2010[2]. In March 2010 the website TrekMovie.com confirmed the book would be set in the alternate reality of the movie Star Trek, depicting the characters' time at Starfleet Academy[3] Later in March the Simon and Schuster listings were updated, listing the book in both trade paperback, and hardcover, as well as ebook[4]. In May 2010 the Simon and Schuster listings were updated once more, the working title of The Competitive Edge was listed, but the book was moved back to January 2011, with The Delta Anomaly, which had previously been listed as "Starfleet Academy Untitled Paperback #2" becoming the first book in the series, remaining at the November 2010 release date[5]. In August 2010 another update to Simon and Schuster's website changed the title to the shorter form of, The Edge.
