"The Shellfish" was a nickname given to Elizabeth Shelby during her early Starfleet career. It was presumably a commentary on her emotional seriousness, refering perhaps to her hard exterior, or a play on the descriptive phrase "cold fish". (NF short story: "All That Glisters...")
