Thomkins was a Starfleet crewman serving aboard the USS Enterprise, under the command of Captain James T. Kirk, in the mid-2260s.

In 2267, Head Nurse Christine Chapel detected that Thomkins was displaying the first symptoms of space cafard. Her report indicated to Doctor Leonard McCoy that the crew needed shore leave. (TOS novel: Mission to Horatius)
