The Togota are a telepathic humanoid species which lived in the vast Togo jungle of the planet Mobita.

Background[]

The Togota were pacifist and unsophisticated, residing in an isolated tribal society. They lived in peace in huts in small villages, welcoming strangers with friendship and hospitality. All were talented artisans and sculptors, crafting majestic statues. Hunting weapons included spears, staffs and cudgels, though they possessed some swords.

Togota are mute, communicating by projecting visual illusions. Some are static and symbolic, whereas other images are convincingly solid and mobile.

History[]

In the 23rd century, the Togota were discovered by the Mobian civilization. Togota generosity and friendliness earned them the nickname "The Sweet People".

In 2264, chieftain Mwipi accepted a pouch of tobacco in exchange for a museum-quality bust he'd sculpted. Soon such trades made them appear naive. Mobians began exploiting, then murdering Togota, burning their villages, and kidnapping them for slave labor. Eventually the Togota hardened, losing their trustful nature.

In 2265, the Klingon Empire discreetly sent a small contingent of advisors into the Mobian jungle. Their intentions were to train and support an armed Togota rebellion that would overthrow the Mobian government and serve as Klingon puppets, or to be slaughtered in battle so that Klingons could "liberate" the planet. If Klingon involvement was discovered, however, they were to kill all witnesses by bombing the Togo jungle and slaughtering the Togota.

By 2266, the Togota had launched a civil war against the Mobians, and they were suddenly armed with directed energy weapons. Mobian Prime Minister Aado attempted several parleys, but was driven away by the new weapons.

In 2266, Starfleet intercepted communications regarding Klingon agents on Mobita, and sent James T. Kirk undercover to investigate. He discovered two Klingons giving marksmanship lessons to a group of Togota, but before Kirk could escape with photographic evidence, a Klingon commander exposed him. Chieftain Mwipi forced Kirk into a trial by combat, first with a large Togota, then with the Klingon commander. After being beaten, the commander signaled his battlecruiser to bomb the jungle. Luckily, the Federation starship USS Enterprise had driven off his ship. The Togota then made peace with the Mobians. (TOS comic: "One of Our Captains Is Missing!")
