R. Torres (alternately given as René Torres and Ricardo Torres) was a 24th century Human man, a pilot with Starfleet officer's training. By the year 2364, he had attained the rank of lieutenant and served aboard the Federation starship USS Enterprise-D.
In the early 2360s decade, Torres served aboard the USS Firenze as a flight controller along with his lover, Miranda Kadohata. In 2364, they were both assigned to the Galaxy-class Enterprise, under the command of Captain Jean-Luc Picard. (TNG novel: Q & A)
En route to the Enterprise's first mission to Deneb IV, the starship was visited by Q. When Torres attempted to draw his hand phaser after Q's intrusion, he was frozen by the entity. He was eventually thawed by Doctor Ismail Asenzi and his medical team. (TNG novelization: Encounter at Farpoint)
Despite his recovery, Torres was still shocked by what Q had done to him and it altered him personally. He ended his relationship with Kadohata and applied for a transfer off the Enterprise. He eventually resigned his commission altogether and became a private shuttle pilot. (TNG novel: Q & A)

The TNG novel: The Buried Age gives Torres the first name of René, which, according to the author's annotations by Christopher L. Bennett, was given in honor of TNG writer and producer, René Echevarria. Alternately, TNG novel: Q & A gives Torres the first name of Ricardo.
