Trellium is a mineral found in the Gamma Quadrant and the Delphic Expanse.

History and specifics[]

In the Delphic Expanse, terllium is used by starships as insulation against anomalies. Trellium comes in multiple forms and trellium-A is extremely common and easy to synthesize. However, it is trellium-D that is useful as insulation, and it is rare and difficult to process. Trellium can only be synthesized in a liquid state, though the synthesized form is just as useful as the natural ore. While still a liquid it must be immediately applied to the inner hull, where it will then set. The synthesis process is very complex and very dangerous, due to the high levels of pressure and radiation involved. (ENT episode: "Rajiin")

Trellium can be deadly to Vulcans, exposure to trellium initially causes a loss of emotional control. Prolonged exposure leads to violent rage and insanity, followed by death. The effects of prolonged exposure are irreversible. Additionally Vulcans can become addicted to the emotional release that small amounts of trellium exposure can give them. Exposing oneself to trellium in this manner can cause permanent damage to a Vulcan's emotional suppression mechanisms, as T'Pol discovered. (ENT episodes: "Impulse", "Damage", ENT - Rise of the Federation novel: A Choice of Futures)

A nontoxic form of the mineral, trellium-K, was first synthesized in 2310. Subsequently, trellium-K became popular for widespread use in research and development applications throughout the Federation, the Klingon Empire, and the Romulan Republic. (ST video game: Star Trek Online)

In 2372, Quark opened negotiations with the Aulep, hoping to buy trellium from the Gamma Quadrant. The trellium was later stolen and the Aulep came looking for it at Deep Space 9. (DS9 novel: Trial by Error)
