The USS Aeolus (NCC-588) was a 23rd century Federation starship, authorized on stardate 0965 by Starfleet for construction as a Mk VII Hermes-class class I scout. (TOS reference: Star Fleet Technical Manual)

In the late 2250s, Lt. Commander James T. Kirk served aboard the Aeolus as second officer. The Aeolus responded to a call about Aldebaran pirates terrorizing a system. Prior to going to the call, Cecilia Simmons was picked up. The Aeolus was ambushed and destroyed by the pirates. Years later, Kirk still held onto the belief that Simmons had a hand in the Aeolus' destruction. (TOS novel: Enemy Unseen)
