The USS Ahwahnee (NCC-71620[4] and NCC-73620) was a 24th century Federation starship, a Cheyenne-class heavy cruiser in Starfleet service from the 2350s[3] to the 2410s[2] decade. In the year 2367, the Ahwahnee took part in the Battle of Wolf 359. (TNG episode: "The Best of Both Worlds")

Service history[]

24th century[]

USS Ahwahnee wreck

The wreck of the Ahwahnee at Wolf 359.

The USS Ahwahnee entered service in the 2350s. (ST video game: Starship Creator)

Cheyenne-class were named after vast, open spaces on Federation members's worlds. (Star Trek Adventures RPG module: Utopia Planitia Starfleet Sourcebook)

The Ahwahnee was named after the Native American name for the Yosemite Valley on Earth. (TOSC Issue 108: "Cheyenne Class")

In the year 2358, Ensign Erika Benteen was assigned to the vessel as a flight controller officer. (TNG video game: Starship Creator)

The USS Ahwahnee was part of the fleet of 40 ships assembled by Vice Admiral J.P. Hanson to waylay Borg cube 632[5] at Wolf 359. Hanson's fleet engaged Locutus' cube in battle and hoped to stop it from reaching Earth in Sector 001. Locutus of Borg, the assimilated Starfleet captain Jean-Luc Picard, used his tactical knowledge to decimate the Federation fleet. The Ahwahnee was wrecked in the battle. (STO - Task Force Operation mission: "Battle of Wolf 359")

The wreck of the Ahwahnee was floating in space as the USS Enterprise-D passed by the battle site. (TNG episode: "The Best of Both Worlds")

In 2368, USS Ahwahnee, now with the NCC registry number NCC-71620, was active and became part of the 23 starships that formed the rehabilitated Captain Picard's tachyon detection grid network placed on the Klingon-Romulan border during the Klingon Civil War. Starfleet deployed the fleet to prevent the Romulan Star Empire from interfering in the Klingon war. The Ahwahnee was one of the ships, identified by name and registry number, monitored on a display aboard the Enterprise-D. On stardate 45020.4, the Romulans disrupted the network. Picard ordered the fleet to Gamma Eridon at maximum warp for redeployment, but the Romulans were detected regardless, ending the Star Empire's involvement in the war and cutting the conflict short. (TNG episode: "Redemption")

Around stardate 73XX.6, circa 2377, the Ahwahnee was rated a level 4 battle group light cruiser. It featured room for four officers and slots for five weapons or additional systems. Its deflector shields were rated 430, while the structural integrity field, or hull strength, topped at 585. As part of Federation Starfleet operations in the Trexelian Expanse, the USS Ahwahnee participated in the war games conducted by Starfleet and allied vessels from the 23rd and 24th centuries. (ST video game: Trexels mission: "Skirmish")

The Ahwahnee also saw action in conflicts with the Klingon Empire, Cardassian Union and Breen Confederacy. (ST video game: Trexels missions: "Events", "Breen Barrier")

25th century[]

From 2410 onwards, the Ahwahnee represented the Cheyenne class on the shipyards interfaces operated by New Romulus Shipyards, Klingon Defense Force Order of Builders and Starfleet Shipyards Operations at Khitomer Alliance facilities across the Milky Way Galaxy. The Ahwahnee was rated a tier 3 heavy cruiser and heavy cruiser retrofit, alongside the Constellation-class USS Stargazer replica, Dakota-class USS Dakota and Stargazer-class USS Stargazer-A. (STO - The Iconian War missions: "Explore the Flotilla", "The Hunt is On", "Welcome to Earth Spacedock")

Flag officers of the Alliance could deploy the Ahwahnee alongside other spacecraft for assignments across the galaxy's quadrants as part of Operation: Delta Rising's four-quadrant strategy. (STO - New Dawn mission: "Admiralty System")

In 2411, Captain Ezri Dax oversaw a Khitomer Alliance training simulation wherein Alliance starships re-enacted the battle on the holodeck to prepare for combat with the Borg Kingdom from the mirror universe. The Ahwahnee was one of the ships recreated holographically for the operation. (STO - Task Force Operation mission: "Battle of Wolf 359")

In that year, Starfleet commissioned the Ahwahnee-class command carrier prototype USS Ahwahnee (NCC-91620), a modern starship that was part of the quad-nacelled Cheyenne- and Constellation-class line of ships. (STO website: 14th Anniversary Bundle!)

The tier 3 heavy cruisers were upgraded to tier 6 command carrier rating, including the Cheyenne-class Ahwahnee. (STO - Both Worlds mission: "Welcome to Earth Spacedock")
