The USS Akagi (NCC-62158) was a Federation Rigel-class starship in service to Starfleet in the late 24th century. Akagi was named in honor of the Japanese aircraft carrier Akagi. (TNG episode: "Redemption", ST reference: Star Trek Encyclopedia)
In 2368, the Akagi was one of 23 starships that formed part of a tachyon detection grid, when Captain Jean-Luc Picard established the network along the Klingon-Romulan border in order to expose the Romulan's involvement in the Klingon Civil War. (TNG episode: "Redemption", Part II)
Nagurski transferred from the Akagi to the USS Enterprise-D. (TNG comic: "Wet Behind the Ears")
In 2373, Crewman 1st Class Joseph Kirby was assigned to the Akagi. (TNG video game: Starship Creator)
In 2374, the Akagi was part of the Starfleet 9th Fleet headquartered at Deep Space 9. (DS9 episode: "You Are Cordially Invited...") Later that year, after a battle with the Dominion Forces, the Akagi reported 20 MIA and 1 KIA. (DS9 episode: "In the Pale Moonlight")
