The USS Akagi (NCC-62158) was a Federation Rigel-class starship in service to Starfleet in the late 24th century. Akagi was named in honor of the Japanese aircraft carrier Akagi. (TNG episode: "Redemption", ST reference: Star Trek Encyclopedia)
History and specificationsEdit
In 2368, the Akagi was one of 23 starships that formed part of a tachyon detection grid, when Captain Jean-Luc Picard established the network along the Klingon-Romulan border in order to expose the Romulan's involvement in the Klingon Civil War. During this event, the Akagi worked in conjunction with the USS Hornet to create a hole in the network thus allowing an opportunity to entrap Romulan vessels making use of the gap. (TNG episode: "Redemption", Part II, ST website: Startrek.com)
In 2374, the Akagi was part of the Starfleet 9th Fleet headquartered at Deep Space 9. (DS9 episode: "You Are Cordially Invited") Later that year, after a battle with the Dominion Forces, the Akagi reported 20 MIA and 1 KIA. (DS9 episode: "In the Pale Moonlight")
In 2374 and 2375, the Akagi reported numerous casualties after fighting against the Dominion. (DS9 episodes: "In the Pale Moonlight", "Image in the Sand", "The Siege of AR-558", "What You Leave Behind")
