The USS Aquila (NCC-623) was a Federation Hermes-class (Cygnus-subclass) scout starship in service in the late 23rd century. She was authorized for Starfleet appropriation on stardate 5099. (TOS reference: Star Fleet Technical Manual)
- Note: The Aquila's registry number has also been assigned to the Oberth-class starship, USS Copernicus.
In 2270, the Aquila was destroyed while patrolling near the Romulan Neutral Zone. Initial suspicions by Starfleet Command placed the blame on the Romulans. It was later revealed to be part of an elaborate plot by the Metans of Meta IV to spark a war between the United Federation of Planets, the Klingon Empire, and the Romulan Star Empire.
