It was classed as a light cruiser.

On reference stardate 2/1705, the Ardent stopped for supplies at the neutral planet Ectair. While here, it discovered a squadron of Romulan vessels that had gone around the Romulan Neutral Zone via the Outback. Though the Romulans were only there to trade and explore, the Ardent's hot-headed captain challenged the Romulans, nearly starting a major diplomatic incident. Ectair's leader, Emerak Mozinphar, stepped in to mediate the dispute, which eventually led to the Treaty of Ectair. (FASA RPG modules: A Doomsday Like Any Other, Star Trek IV Sourcebook Update)
