In 2365, Marion Dulmur and Gariff Lucsly used the Brin, piloted by Lieutenant Commander Mara Kadray, to travel to Kaferia. There they hoped to prevent a Manheim Effect-type vortex from killing Alan Manheim and destroying part of the planet. (DTI novel: Watching the Clock)
According to author Christopher L. Bennett's annotations, the USS Brin was named for American scientist and science fiction author David Brin, author of The River of Time. The author intended the Brin to be an older type of runabout from the Danube-class.
