The USS Charleston was a Federation Excelsior-class explorer in service to Starfleet in the late 23rd and early 24th centuries. She was a predecessor to the second Excelsior-class starship named USS Charleston. (Decipher RPG module: Starships)

The Charleston was displaced by an unstable wormhole to territory held by the Romulan Star Empire in 2293. She managed a return journey to the Federation. (Decipher RPG module: Starships)

In the Tomed Incident of 2311, the Charleston was destroyed by the Romulan bird-of-prey Suran. (Decipher RPG module: Starships)

This starship is given the registry of the second Charleston, a starship in service fifty years after the first ship had been destroyed by Romulans.
