The USS Danube (NX-72003) was a Federation Danube-class runabout in service to the Starfleet in the 24th century. When commissioned in 2368, the Danube was the prototype for a new class of runabouts. In her role as the first ship, the Danube was used for testing different multi-function modules. The Danube was named in honor of a river on Earth. (ST:CCG: Deep Space Nine, ST roleplay module: Starships)

Starfleet began construction of the Danube at the Utopia Planitia Fleet Yards in 2365 and test flights originating from the surface of Mars began in 2368. Warp drive tests were later conducted in the Sol system at the same time that her sister ships were being constructed. (Star Trek: Deep Space Nine Technical Manual)
