"It's easy to cling to your principles when you're standing on a vessel with its bulkheads intact, manned by a crew that's not starving."
Rudolph Ransom, 2375[src]

The USS Equinox (NCC-72381) was a Federation starship, a Nova-class heavy scout in service to Starfleet in the 24th century. Equinox was launched in the year 2370 under the command of Captain Rudolph Ransom.

Service history and disposition[]

A few weeks later while performing a scientific survey near the Badlands, the Equinox was pulled into the Delta Quadrant by the Caretaker.

During the Equinox's first week in the Delta Quadrant, it passed through a region of space occupied by the Krowtonan Guard. Half the crew was killed during that time.

Some time before 2376, the Equinox entered orbit around the Ankari homeworld after having exhausted its supplies of food and dilithium. While the crew met with the Ankari, the Ankari summoned "spirits of good fortune", which the crew discovered were nucleogenic lifeforms. The crew summoned one of the life-forms, but unintentionally killed it. Thereafter, the crew used the creature's remains to enhance the ship's warp drive. The Equinox crew continued summoning and killing the aliens in order to continue powering their warp drive; but the aliens began attacking the Equinox, severely damaging the ship and killing many crew members.

Later in 2376, the Equinox was destroyed when it battled the USS Voyager over the killing of the nucleogenic lifeforms to get home faster. The surviving crewmembers were absorbed into Voyager's crew.
