The USS Essex (registry NCC-1697, sometimes referred to as NCC-1719 or NCC-1727) was a Federation Constitution-class (of the Mk II Bonhomme Richard-subclass class I/class IX heavy cruiser starship in Starfleet service in the 23rd century.
- The TOS reference: Star Fleet Technical Manual gives the Essex's registry number as NCC-1727, while the TOS roleplay module: Federation Ship Recognition Manual gives it as NCC-1719. Finally, the ST reference: Star Trek Encyclopedia gives the registry as NCC-1697.
The Essex was commissioned and launched on reference stardate 2/0104, having been authorized for construction on stardate 3220. She was later refit as a mk III Achernar-subclass on reference stardate 2/0209. (TOS roleplay module: Federation Ship Recognition Manual)
In 2269, the Essex was under the command of Captain Salar. That year, the crew intervened during a Klingon attempt to interfere with the culture of 34 Kraol III. (TOS roleplay module: An Imbalance of Power)
