The USS Excelsior (NCC-1729) was an Armstrong-type Federation starship in service to Starfleet in the mid-23rd century.

In 2258 of an alternate reality brought about by Nero's interference, the Excelsior was destroyed by the Narada during a mission to investigate a lightning storm in space in the proximity of Vulcan. (TOS novelization: Star Trek)
