The USS Excelsior (NCC-1718) was a Constitution-class starship launched in the 2250s. (TOS reference: Star Fleet Technical Manual)

In 2267, the Excelsior was docked at Starbase 11 undergoing repairs. (TOS episode: "Court Martial")

In 2269, the Excelsior, under the command of Captain LaLiberte, along with the USS Republic, was dispatched to Altair VII in response to an unknown entity had been attacking several targets in the Beta Quadrant. Captain Kirk and the crew of the USS Enterprise discovered that a vast machine planet intelligence from a parallel universe called Nagha was behind the attacks. (TOS short story: "The Sleeping God")
