Service history and disposition[]
The Federation was the prototype of the Federation class, first authorized by Starfleet on stardate 6066. (TOS reference: Star Fleet Technical Manual)
Flagship service[]
The USS Federation leads a Starfleet task force against a Klingon force near Gorn space.
Midway through the year 2269, the USS Federation was placed under the command of Admiral Heihachiro Nogura, who covertly struck a deal with representatives of the Romulan Star Empire (including Commander Liviana Charvanek and Subcommander Tal) to double-cross the Klingon Empire during a deal involving Romulan acceptance of Klingon D7-class battlecruisers in a supposed treaty. Not long thereafter, the Federation led a task force of five Constitution-class starships (initially cloaked, utilizing a Starfleet-engineered variant of the Romulan cloaking device recovered in mid-2268 by Captain James T. Kirk) in an assault against Klingon forces under Commander Kor near Gorn space — involving a stolen Preserver artifact and the Organians—covering the damaged USS Enterprise's escape under fire. Refit[]
