The USS Fleming[2] was a 24th century Federation starship, an Olympic-class medical frigate in Starfleet service in the 2380s decade. (ST - Countdown comic: "Number Three")
Service history and disposition[]
Namesakes[]
In the 2370s, Starfleet operated the Wambundu-class USS Fleming. It was named after Sir Alexander Fleming, a British Human bacteriologist who discovered penicillin. (ST reference: Encyclopedia, 4th ed.)
This Fleming operated as a medical transport in 2370. (TNG episode: "Force of Nature")
Romulan supernova[]
An impending supernova threatened the Romulan homeworld Romulus around stardate 64333.4 in the year 2387. (ST - Countdown comic: "Number One")
Starfleet dispatched a trio of Olympic-class medical frigates, led by Captain Newton and the USS Galen. Newton's ships arrived shortly after the destruction of Romulus. Newton hailed the nearby Romulan mining freighter Narada. Captain Nero suspected the Federation ships had intentionally arrived at this time to claim Romulan space. He had mining tools beamed aboard Newton's ships, detonating the vessels. (ST - Countdown comic: "Number Three")
Survivors of the Fleming launched in escape pods. Wreckage of their ship became embedded in asteroids. The escape pods and the asteroids drifted to the Icari star system in the Teneebia sector.
In 2409, the Icarian Ruling Council detected the asteroids approaching their world, Icari Prime and requested aid from Starfleet. Commander Argus Genstra of Starbase 39-Sierra dispatched a starship. A scan of the first asteroid uncovered debris from the Fleming. The escape pods were found as well but no survivors. Starfleet decided to stabilize the asteroid's orbits and inform family and friends of the USS Fleming crew, solving the decades old mystery. (STO - Patrol the Teneebia Sector mission: "Icari System Patrol")
Legacy[]
By the 2410s, Starfleet had commissioned a new USS Fleming. The Fleming was among the Olympic-class research vessels aiding the evacuation of the Sol system when it was threatened by the Other and the Terran Emperor Wesley Crusher in 2411. (STO - Terran Gambit mission: "The Fujiwhara Effect")
