The USS Melbourne (NCC-62043) was an Excelsior-class explorer in service during the 24th century.
In 2364, the Melbourne was docked at Starbase 74 at the same time as the USS Enterprise-D, undergoing repairs. When the Enterprise was subsequently stolen by the Bynars repairs on the Melbourne was rushed as it was the only vessel that could travel fast enough to catch the Enterprise. (TNG episode: "11001001")
By the mid 2360s a Nebula-class replacement was under construction to replace the Melbourne, and the new Melbourne was ready by 2367. Both the old and new Melbourne were sent to the Wolf 359 system to face the Borg, and both ships were subsequently lost in the course of the battle. (TNG episodes: "The Best of Both Worlds, Parts I & II", DS9 episode: "Emissary")
