Sally Ride was a Human astronaut who lived on Earth in the 20th century. She was the first woman send into space by the United States of America. (TOS - The Eugenics Wars novel: The Rise and Fall of Khan Noonien Singh, Volume 1)

In the 23rd century, Starfleet commissioned this ship named after the pioneer.

In the year 2269, security officer Ensign Fawzia Yaseen transferred from this vessel to the Constitution-class heavy cruiser USS Enterprise. (TOS novel: The Weight of Worlds)
