The USS Sphinx was a 23rd century Federation starship, a Centaurus-class vessel in Starfleet service in the 2260s decade.

Service history and disposition[]

As of the year 2268, Sphinx was commanded by Captain Jack Casden.

That year, the Sphinx transported a number of scientists from Deep Space Station R-5 to a secret base in the Lantaru sector. When Captain Casden learned the illegal nature of the research being conducted at the space station and threatened to reveal it, he and the Sphinx crew were murdered, and the ship nearly destroyed. The hulk was recovered by the USS Enterprise and towed to Deep Space Station M-20 for investigation. (TOS - Section 31 novel: Cloak)

Rear Admiral James T. Kirk, musing in 2273 about the recent developments in Starfleet's deployment, recalled the Sphinx alongside the USS Ashoka and USS Exeter as Starfleet vessels that had lost their entire crews. (TOS novel: Ex Machina)
