The USS Stargazer (NCC-2893-A) was the prototype Federation Starfleet Stargazer-class heavy cruiser starship in service in the late-24th century. Unlike many starships being built by the Federation at this time, the Stargazer-A and her sister ships were geared toward "scientific research and exploration" and was considered to be one of the "Ships of the Line." Construction of the Stargazer began at the San Francisco Fleet Yards on stardate 58839.03, in 2381; she had entered active service by 2387. (ST websites: Ships of the Line, The Path to 2409)

That year, the Stargazer-A was sent to the Devos system in order to keep an eye on a group of Alpha Jem'Hadar that had taken control of a former Dominion ketracel-white storage facility on Devos II. The Stargazer was to take no further actions unless the Jem'Hadar made aggressive moves. This mission was part of Starfleet's arrangement to help the Cardassians deal with "issues outside of their borders." (ST website: The Path to 2409)

While ship conducted a stellar survey near 2466 M in 2393, the Stargazer was contacted by the Metron Consortium. (STO novel: The Needs of the Many)
