As of the year 2376, Sugihara was under the command of Captain Janna Demitrijian, with Lieutenant Barbanti serving as chief engineer.

In early-2376, the Sugihara was near Eerlik when it responded to a distress call from a Talarian cargo ship. While assisting them, the USS da Vinci also sent a distress call when they came under attack by the Senbolma. When the Sugihara arrived, the da Vinci had taken care of the situation. (SCE eBook: Fatal Error)

In mid-2376, the Sugihara travelled to planet Vrinda, where they retrieved Starfleet crewpersons Carol Abramowitz, Bart Faulwell, and Soloman, and also took custody of accused criminal Martin Mansur. (SCE eBook: Age of Unreason)

In late 2379, the Sugihara transported Ambassador Worf from Earth to Qo'noS after a meeting with members of the Federation Council. (TNG novel: A Time for War, a Time for Peace)

In late 2380, the Sugihara transported an ailing Tzenkethi child, smuggled secretly across to the Federation border, to Starbase 1 for a life-saving operation. (ST novel: Articles of the Federation)

Alternate reality[]

In an alternate timeline where the Cardassians did not withdraw from Bajor, William T. Riker was given command of the Sugihara in 2373, and Geordi La Forge became his first officer. (ST - Myriad Universes novel: A Gutted World)

Background[]

The Sugihara was named after Chiune SugiharaWP, a Japanese diplomat to Lithuania who helped thousands of Lithuanian Jews to freedom during World War II. The name was suggested by Carol Greenburg to Keith R. A. DeCandido.
