The USS Valiant (NCC-1731) was a Constitution-class (mark II subclass) Federation cruiser starship in the 23rd century, entering Starfleet service on reference stardate 2/0010, authorized by the Starfleet appropriation of stardate 4444 to be named as a replacement for the USS Valiant (NCC-1709). The Valiant was refit to Constitution mark III specifications on stardate 2/0312, and again to Enterprise-subclass specifications on stardate 2/1802. By the 2280s, Valiant was outfitted to the specifications of an Enterprise-subclass class XI vessel, specifically as a rear-fire heavy cruiser. (FASA RPG module: Federation Ship Recognition Manual; ST video game: Starfleet Command)

The stardate given would seem to suggest this ship was authorized during the mid-to-late 2260s. The FASA RPG supplement, Federation Ship Recognition Manual, describes this ship as USS Valiant (NCC-1718), possibly an indication that the "NCC-1731" vessel was never built, or that the numbers were changed and the "NCC-1718" ship is one and the same with the SFTM vessel.
