The USS Wellington (NCC-50000) was a Federation starship, the prototype Wellington-class class XI light cruiser starship that was in service to Starfleet in the 24th century. This ship was named for Humans and locations from the history of Earth. This vessel was succeeded in its name by a later ship, the Niagara-class USS Wellington.
Construction of the Wellington was completed on reference stardate 2/8802, in the later 2350s decade. This vessel was commissioned at one of the two shipyards that produced Wellington-class vessels, either Vannis Shipyards, Troyius Shipyards or Argelius Shipyards. (FASA RPG module: Star Trek: The Next Generation Officer's Manual)
- Before the Star Trek Encyclopedia clarified the class of the Niagara-class USS Wellington referred to in TNG episode: "11001001", FASA had apparently intended to assign this ship as the Wellington mentioned. This contradiction can be reconciled using dates that establish the newer Niagara-class ship had succeeded this vessel and assumed its name.
