|Commanding officer:||Captain Phil Burroughs, Captain Zair|
The USS Zephyr was a Federation Miranda-class cruiser starship in Starfleet service in the 23rd century. This ship was in active service around the 2280s decade. (TOS comics: "The Stars in Secret Influence", "Aspiring to be Angels", "Marriage of Inconvenience", "Old Loyalties")
In early 2287, the Zephyr, while under the command of Captain Phil Burroughs, was commandeered by mercenaries led by Garth of Izar, who imitated Burroughs's appearance while identifying himself as "Zair." Izar renamed the ship the Renegade, fitting to its rogue status, and attacked a Klingon outpost without provocation. The USS Enterprise-A, under James T. Kirk, stopped the Zephyr, although Izar disappeared. It was later revealed Izar had killed the real Captain Burroughs two weeks earlier. He had become fixated on Kirk after having lost the prestige of his past career, despite having been cured of his earlier madness. Garth was eventually caught aboard the Enterprise-A, where he was impersonating Enterprise security officer Bloemker, whom he had killed after abandoning Burroughs's appearance, but only after a nearly-successful attempt to assassinate Kirk. (TOS - Who Killed Captain Kirk? comics: "The Stars in Secret Influence", "Aspiring to be Angels", "Marriage of Inconvenience", "Finnegan's Wake!")
|Ships named Zephyr|
|USS Zephyr (Miranda-class) • USS Zephyr (Steamrunner-class) • USS Zephyr (Zephyr-class prototype)|
The Zephyr was drawn to appear as a Miranda-class vessel in all of its various appearances, however, the ship had three conflicting registry numbers through two of its appearances. In "The Stars in Secret Influence", the ship had no visible registry number. In "Aspiring To Be Angels", the ship bore the registry NCC-1005, but by "Marriage of Inconvenience" it had changed to NCC-1905, and was then later seen as NCC-1023, with some script on the hull that almost seemed to spell out "Bolland". At no time in dialogue was it ever referred to as anything other than Renegade, excepting the original identification of it as the Zephyr.
