An uhlan was a title, historically given to a member of a military organization who served as part of a cavalry unit. The name originates in the pre-industrial milieu of Eastern Europe on Earth.

This title was used as a rank for lowly members of the military of the Romulan Star Empire. Proconsul Neral started in the military as a uhlan before moving to his political career. (TNG episode: "Unification"; TTN novel: Taking Wing)
