Summary
Edit
The Enterprise has been called to the planet Eeiauo to deal with an outbreak of plague. With McCoy headng up the medical team on the surface, Evan Wilson has joined the crew as acting chief medical officer. The situation becomes more serious when the virus spreads to humans and outbreaks occur all over the Federation.
Uhura, who once befriended an Eeiauoan named Sunfall, recalls a song she once sang for her which indicated her people originated on another planet and also referred to the plague, suggesting a cure might lie there. The Eeiauoans are reluctant to discuss the matter but McCoy's assistant Quickfoot admits the truth: Their ancestors were exiled from their home, Sivao, two thousand years previous.
Using the information from the song, Spock and Uhura identify the planet. The Enterprise crew quickly make contact with the inhabitants but they too are reluctant to discuss the matter. Wilson eventually realises the Sivaoans view them as children so the crew volunteer to take a trek regarded as a right of passage, being joined on it by natives Jinx and Brightspot.
During the trek, it becomes clear Chekov has the plague, which he is particularly susceptible to. Wilson suggests Uhura sing the song about the plague in a different key and Jinx realises the song refers to a disease which the Sivaoans now view as a minor childhood ailment, easily treated. Chekov is given the cure and the group reach their destination. They also discover the reality of the Eeiauoans' "crime": They chose to live in cities rather than be nomads but doing so brought together diseases that wiped out some of the flora and fauna. Both parties have been ashamed of how they dealt with the situation ever since.
After informing McCoy of the cure, the Enterprise returns to Eeiauo with a number of Sivaoans who are eager to re-establish contact. Wilson is recalled but when Kirk and McCoy try and contact her they are instead confronted with a male Evan Wilson: The one who boarded the Enterprise was an imposter, who seems to exist as a part con artist, part Robin Hood type.

Background
Edit
The Eeiauoans were mentioned again in DS9 novel: Devil in the Sky, briefly, as participants in pornography that Nog owned.
The cover image shows the refit Enterprise from the Star Trek movie era, even though the contents and other timeline materials place this story years before that ship design was put into use. The Starfleet uniforms on the cover do agree with the novel taking place in the 2260s era, although Spock's patch seems to be from a later design.
