Description[]

Based on the epic two-part television episode, here now is the story STAR TREK™ fans have awaited for five long years, the story that bring together Spock -- the enigmatic Vulcan who personified the original, classic STAR TREK -- with the crew of the Next Generation.

Screenwriter Jeri Taylor brings all the excitement and wonder that have captivated fans of the smash television series STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION™ to this story of Spock's forbidden journey into the heart of the Romulan Empire -- and the U.S.S. Enterprise's desperate attempts to discover the reasons for his mission there.

Join now with Captain Picard, Lieutenant Commander Data, and the rest of the Next Generation crew on a voyage of unsurpassed adventure, a voyage that brings them to the edge of history -- and forces them to confront a shattering betrayal!

Picard and the Enterprise crew are sent to investigate what appears to be the defection of Ambassador Spock to Romulus. Captain Picard and Lt. Cmdr. Data disguise themselves as Romulans and are transported to Romulus. There they discover that Spock is actually attempting the reunification of Vulcan and Romulus, and working with a Romulan underground movement. Picard's Romulan nemesis, Commander Sela, reappears and captures the Starfleet officers and the ambassador, all as part of a plan to conquer Vulcan. The three must escape from their Romulan prison and foil Sela's plans for invasion.

Summary[]

Picard is informed by an old friend, Admiral Brackett, that Ambassador Spock has been sighted on Romulus with no explanation. Picard travels to Vulcan and meets the increasingly confused and dying Sarek, who suggests Spock might have contacted Senator Pardek, a moderate Romulan politician with whom he has a long-standing friendship. Picard is able to secure the services of a cloaked Klingon ship and he and Data travel to Romulus disguised as Romulans.

Meanwhile, Riker and the Enterprise investigate the discovery of a Vulcan deflector array on a crashed Ferengi ship. They discover the Vulcan ship it was taken from has gone missing from a shipyard. Riker and security officer Gretchen Naylor identify a member of the Zakdorn staff who has been feeding information to a smuggler, Melcor, allowing him to obtain ship parts. The Enterprise is involved in a confrontation with Melcor's ship, which is destroyed.

Picard and Data are soon found by Pardek's people and taken to Spock, who has made contact with the Romulan Unification movement, who hope for a reunion between the Vulcan and Romulan peoples. A new proconsul, Neral, is apparently sympathetic to the movement but Picard and Spock are both suspicious of him. Meanwhile, the Enterprise uncovers evidence that Melcor was part of a network smuggling Vulcan ship parts to the Romulans at Galorndon Core.

Neral and Pardek turn out to be working with Sela, who takes Picard, Spock and Data prisoner while Neral's troops massacre members of the Unification movement. Sela reveals the Romulans have acquired three Vulcan ships which will transport an invasion force to Vulcan: A faked message from Spock will claim they are a peace envoy seeking reunification. Her prisoners manage to overpower Sela and her guards and use the message to warn the Enterprise and Vulcan of the invasion. The Enterprise pursues the stolen Vulcan ships which are destroyed by a Romulan warbird rather than let their people be captured.

Picard, Spock and Sela escape from Sela's base and meet the survivors of the unification movement, who have taken refuge in another cave network. Picard and Data prepare to return to the Klingon ship but Spock chooses to remain behind, believing one day the movement will cause the Romulans to embrace Vulcan philosophy.
