Flag of the United Nations.

The United Nations (UN) was an organization of states on Earth, chartered in San Francisco in 1945 as a forum to promote peace around the planet. Shortly thereafter, its world headquarters was established in New York City.

On August 29, 1994, Vasily Hunyadi, an Augment behind the Serbian government, addressed the United Nations in defiance against the economic sanctions and the NATO peacekeeping presence in his country. During his speech, members of the Army of Eternal Vigilance released sarin gas into the council chambers, killing Hunyadi as well as many ambassadors and tourists. (TOS novel: The Rise and Fall of Khan Noonien Singh, Volume 2)

The United Nations was superceded sometime prior to 2036 by the New United Nations. (TNG episode & novelization: Encounter at Farpoint)

The United Nations is one of the organizations to have served as a model for the United Federation of Planets. The oft-cited figure of 150 Federation members reflects the similar number of members of the UN, and the Great Seal of the United Federation of Planets is based upon the United Nations flag.
