A single survivor, a hysterical Andorian, escaped from the vessel and further spread the disease after a rescue attempt by the crew of the USS Surak. Some machination of the intelligent bug's plot destroyed the freighter by engine explosion when the Surak crew attempted to retrieve the bodies to study the illness. This Tellarite lived on the planet Sanctuary in a camp with others, including three Humans, an Orion, a Gorn, and two Klingons.

This band of survivalists lived outside the villages on the planet and once captured James T. Kirk, Spock, and Leonard McCoy. The Tellarite distrusted the three because they wore Federation Starfleet uniforms. (TOS novel: Sanctuary)
