My congratulations to Christopher L. Bennett for writing the most readable and interesting Star Trek novel to come out in years.

Romulan ale short essay
Edit
Beverage historians regard 2387 as the last true vintage of record for Romulan ale, due to it's appellation of controlled origin (Romulan language HHrirh'khessha Njikh, HHrNj). The guilds that determined the HHrNj origin control across the mercantile quadrants of space had quite hoped that the destruction of Romulus had not destroyed the product, and it was eventually found that several other planets in the Romulan Empire could produce ale from descendents of the original Romulan grain plants. Verifying the genetic character of the source grain is a matter of particular issue, since the grain mash used for the ale is made from plants from two very different worlds, with one actually being somewhat of an embarrassment to the Romulans about their offworld origins. The kheh grain that ferments to give Romulan ale its peculiar warming sensation did not originate on Romulus, in fact, it was brought there by the world's original Vulcan settlers, and the bluegrain was transplanted as a culture from the Remus ecosystem. The grains grown on other worlds fail to match the original product due to considerable genetic drift in successive generations of adaptive breeding. Ferengi merchants quickly began buying up remaining ale stock, which has been sealed and labeled by mercantile guilds in order to prevent counterfeiting. Essentially a non-perishable product, sealed bottles could be kept indefinitely, in or out of stasis. In order to prevent economic collapse in border sectors, the Federation President quickly passed a resolution dissolving the previous ban on contraband across the Federation-Romulan Neutral Zone so that wealthy Federation investors could buy up the remaining supply, outbidding the Ferengi and Orion interests that would beggar the tanking Romulan trade market, which was in full disaster recovery mode. The influx of Federation credits helped the Romulan markets gain a small sense of economic security. However, there will never be a new batch of real Romulan ale.
