Early life
Edit
Hikaru Kato Sulu was born in the city of San Francisco on Earth in 2237. (TOS episode: "That Which Survives"; TOS movie: Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home; ST reference: Star Trek Chronology)
Sulu was the son of Kalea Hatoyama and Hosato Sulu, an acclaimed poet whose works included Nine Suns and Fire and Frost. Due to his mothers work as a xenobiologist, Sulu was raised on a variety of different planets and colonies, including Hafjian and Ganjitsu. (TOS comics: "Giri", "Who's Who in Star Trek 2"; TOS novels: The Entropy Effect, Enterprise: The First Adventure)
- In TOS comic: "Who's Who in Star Trek 2" Sulu's mother's name is given as Doctor Momiko Sulu, a xenobiologist.
Despite the constant moving around, Sulu held an impressive academic record which began in primary education. Sulu's desire to improve himself, coupled with his parents continual reading to him, meant that Sulu had a better vocabulary than the average child, and an interest in science and maths also helped. (TOS comic: "Who's Who in Star Trek 2")
Just prior to his admission to Starfleet Academy, Sulu was residing on Station L-319, also known as Mountaindove Station, with his mothers family and worked for the family business, the Hatoyama Corporation, which made cyber-suits for a variety of organizations, including the Federation. (TOS comic: "Giri")

Early years
Edit

Added by The doctorDespite Sulu's wishes to be assigned to a smaller frontier vessel, Sulu was instead assigned to the USS Enterprise, a Constitution-class starship, as the ship's helmsman. Prior to his assignment, Sulu's only experience with piloting a starship came from a series of simulator exercises, so he was unprepared for the beauty and handling of the Enterprise. (TOS comic: "Who's Who in Star Trek 2")
A short time later, Sulu was reassigned to the sciences division and took over the Enterprise's astrosciences department, replacing an officer who had been killed during a landing party mission. Although Sulu provided invaluable assistance in his new role, most notably during the Enterprise's mission to the galactic barrier, he became impatient to return to the helmsman's position. (TOS comic: "Who's Who in Star Trek 2")
Feeling that there wasn't an opportunity for him to serve as a helmsman aboard the Enterprise, Sulu requested to be transferred to another starship. However, when Captain James T. Kirk learned of Sulu's request, the two discussed the issue and Kirk agreed to transfer Sulu to the helm following the untimely death of Lee Kelso on Delta Vega. (TOS - My Brother's Keeper novel: Constitution)
2266
Edit
On stardate 1513, Sulu was assigned to head a landing party and establish a base camp on planet Alpha 177. Due to ion activity in the planet's atmosphere, the Enterprise's transporter and shuttlecraft had malfunctioned, forcing Sulu and the landing party to remain on the planet as the temperature dropped dramatically as night approached. Thankfully, the transporter was repaired and Sulu and his party were beamed aboard, and were all suffering from severe frostbite. Sulu received a commendation, with Doctor Leonard McCoy stating in his medical log that: "only someone with Sulu's healthy constitution could have done it." (TOS episode & novelization: The Enemy Within; TOS comic: "Who's Who in Star Trek 2")

Added by 8of5Around stardate 1704.2, Sulu, along with most of the Enterprise crew, came under the effects of the Psi 2000 virus. Shortly after contracting the virus, Sulu began to fancy himself as a reincarnation of D'Artagnan and ran around the decks of the ship brandishing a fencing sword. He even succeeded in gaining access to the bridge and attempted to "rescue" Lieutenant Nyota Uhura, but was rendered unconscious by a Vulcan nerve pinch, applied by Lieutenant Commander Spock. Sulu and the rest of the crew were later cured by Doctor McCoy. (TOS episode & novelization: The Naked Time)
2267
Edit
On stardate 3113.2, the Enterprise was flung back in time to 1969 after coming into contact with a black star. Arriving in a very low orbit of Earth, the Enterprise was photographed by the US Air Force. Determined to retrieve the evidence, Sulu accompanied Kirk to the 498th Air Base in Omaha, Nebraska to retrieve the evidence. (TOS episode & novelization: Tomorrow is Yesterday)
During the Enterprise's mission to Beta III on stardate 3156, Sulu came under the control of a computerized society led by Landru after being "absorbed". He was later freed when Captain Kirk destroyed Landru. (TOS episode & novelization: The Return of the Archons)
Interim assignments
Edit
Throughout Sulu's service aboard the Enterprise during the five-year mission, he had been active with the top-secret Special Section. During the early 2270s, Sulu was called upon to perform several special assignments, including ones for Rear Admiral Kirk's Starfleet Operations division. During these assignments, Sulu helped stop an Orion uprising and averted an intergalactic war. (TOS comic: "Who's Who in Star Trek 2")
Further service aboard the USS Enterprise
Edit
2270s
Edit

Added by The doctorFollowing the completion of the Enterprise's refit in 2273, Sulu gratefully returned to serve as the ship's helmsman, holding the rank of lieutenant commander. He remained aboard her for a further five-year mission, which was completed in 2278. (TOS movie: The Motion Picture; TOS comic: "Who's Who in Star Trek 2")
In 2277, Sulu was unknowingly infected by a phyto-plankton, a form of bacteria, while he was collecting plant samples on Marris V. Beaming back to the Enterprise, the phyto-plankton took over Sulu and with his body, began to infect the rest of the crew except for Admiral Kirk and Commander Spock. After determining the course and developing a cure for the infection, in the form of saline solution, Kirk and Spock cured Sulu and enlisted his assistance in regaining control of the Enterprise's bridge from infected crew members. (TOS - Star Trek II Short Stories short story: "Wild Card")
2280s
Edit
By 2285, Sulu had been promoted to the rank of full commander and had accepted an assignment at Starfleet Academy. During this time, Sulu continued to serve aboard the Enterprise, as she had been assigned as a training vessel, under the command of Captain Spock.
As the Enterprise was brought back into active service in response to the threat of Khan Noonien Singh, Sulu resumed the role of helmsman, which he retained until the Enterprise was officially retired. (TOS movies: Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, Star Trek III: The Search for Spock)
- According to the novelization of The Wrath of Khan, Sulu had recently been promoted to captain prior to the events of that story, after several officers, including Kirk, Spock and Hunter gave recommendations. Admiral Kirk then approved the orders that would see Sulu assumed command of the USS Excelsior a month after the story. However, these references were later removed in the 2003 reprint of the novelization.
- Reference to Sulu's captaincy was also given in TOS comic: "Who's Who in Star Trek 2". However, in TOS comic: "... The Only Good Klingon...", set shortly after the events of The Wrath of Khan, Sulu ponders whether Starfleet will ever recognize his command abilities and give him a command of his own.
Following Spock's death during the final battle with Khan in the Mutara Nebula, Sulu was appointed as first officer under Admiral Kirk, he had now been granted command of the Enterprise by Grand Admiral Stephen Turner. Shortly after, Sulu assumed command of the Enterprise while Kirk led a small reconnaissance force into a wormhole to investigate a Klingon space station. (TOS comics: "The Wormhole Connection", "... The Only Good Klingon...")
Following the Enterprise's return to Earth, the crew was informed that the ship was to be retired and that they were to be stood down and re-assigned. Despite please from Admiral Kirk to take the Enterprise and return to Genesis, after it came to light that Spock could be resurrected if his body could be recovered and merged with his katra, Starfleet refused. Out of comradeship, Sulu agreed to assist Kirk in stealing the Enterprise, but first had to break Doctor McCoy out of a Federation Security holding cell, in which Sulu was forced to assault a security guard who had referred to him as "tiny". (TOS movie & novelization: Star Trek III: The Search for Spock)
USS Excelsior
Edit
In late 2285, Sulu and the former crew of the Enterprise were assigned to the USS Excelsior, now under Admiral Kirk's command, at the order of Grand Admiral Turner. The crew's responsibility was to work out all of the "bugs" out of the Excelsior and make her a fit prototype for the fleet. (TOS - New Frontiers comic: "Homecoming...") With Captain Spock reassigned to command the USS Surak, Sulu was once again appointed to serve as Kirk's first officer, often assuming command when the admiral was off of the bridge. (TOS comic: "The D'Artagnan Three")
On stardate 8263.5, Sulu was ordered to assume command of the cargo ship D'Artagnan after the Excelsior had captured the cargo vessel illegally transporting dilithium crystals from Cetus V, destined for the black market on Orillius I. Sulu, along with Commander Uhura and Ensign William Bearclaw, were assigned to complete the journey and investigate the smugglers activities. (TOS comic: "The D'Artagnan Three")
USS Enterprise-A
Edit
Further service aboard the USS Excelsior
Edit
By 2308, Sulu had stood down as commanding officer of the Excelsior and the starship was placed under the command of Captain Crajjik. (STA novel: Enigma)
However, by 2320, Sulu was once again in command of the Excelsior. In this year, the Excelsior was field-testing some modifications to the warp drive, when she detected a shuttlecraft traversing an asteroid belt on a course for the Talos Star Group. Determining that the shuttlecraft could be piloted by Ambassador Spock, Sulu contacted the Vulcan to inquire about his destination and purpose. Despite Spock contravening General Order 7, Sulu agreed to cover for Spock and arranged to rendezvous with the Ambassador once his mission to Talos IV was completed. (TOS novel: Burning Dreams)
Later career
Edit
At some point in the 24th century, Sulu was promoted to the rank of commodore. (TNG novel: Q-Squared)
- In Q-Squared, Jean-Luc Picard participates in a fencing match on the USS Enterprise-D's holodeck and his holographic opponent is an elderly Commodore Hikaru Sulu. However, the novel gives no indication of when Sulu held the rank, although he still held the rank of captain in 2320, as stated in Burning Dreams.
Later life
Edit
Sulu later went on to retire from Starfleet and decided to pursue a career in politics, a subject that he had great fondness of since his days aboard the original USS Enterprise, and successfully ran for the office of the President of the Federation Council, serving for an unprecedented three terms. (ST novel: The Return)

Intellect and personality
Edit
As a young child, Sulu was always encouraged to read, especially the classics such as The Three Musketeers, so that when he entered primary education, he had a rather large vocabulary than other children of his age. In all of the various schools that Sulu attended, they had a higher set of standards by the time he left that district. Sulu's advanced reading skills eventually led to him being classified as a "genius" by United Federation of Planets academic officials. (TOS comic: "Who's Who in Star Trek 2")
Mental assaults and trauma
Edit
In 2270, Sulu suffered a serious mental trauma at the hands of Klingon Captain Koloth and a number of Klingon warriors who had mastered Talosian powers to telepathically reach inside a person's mind and create a variety of illusions. In Sulu's case he was forced to participate in an illusion in which he was a Japanese-American civilian who had been taken prisoner following the outbreak of World War II and was being tortured by the US Army to reveal that he was working for Tojo. (TOS comic: "The Final Voyage")
Personal life

Family
Edit
Kiyomori Hatoyama
Edit
Sulu had a rather strained relationship with Kiyomori Hatoyama, his maternal uncle. During his time spent residing on Mountaindove Station with the Hatoyama clan, Sulu developed the idea that Kiyomori disapproved of him, and after departing the station to enroll at Starfleet Academy, Sulu avoided returning to the station.
In 2285, Sulu was duty bound to return to Mountaindove to represent his mother at the wedding between his cousin, Keiko Hatoyama, and Reijiro Heike, a member of the rival Heike clan. The marriage was arranged by Kiyomori to bring an end to the feud and bring the few clans together. Although the initial meeting between Sulu and his uncle were initially strained, tensions were cooled when Sulu saved his uncle's life after a cyber-suit had "malfunctioned" and had attacked the elderly patriarch. Following the wedding, Sulu once again saved Kiyomori from being poisoned at the hands of Reijiro Heike.
As Sulu departed the station, Kiyomori told him that he was very proud of him for his actions and in defending the honor of the clan. (TOS comic: "Giri")

Following his decision to enter Starfleet, Keiko was upset that he was abandoning her, but Sulu insisted that he wasn't leaving Mountaindove forever.
However, Sulu didn't return to the station until 2285 where he was to attend the wedding between Keiko and Reijiro Heike, a member of the rival Heike clan whose marriage had been arranged by Keiko's father, Kiyomori Hatoyama, in the hopes of ending the feud. Reunited with Keiko, they both began to kiss on the the station's observation deck, and were observed by Reijiro.
The marriage went ahead as planned, but it was soon revealed that Reijiro was attempting to assassinate Kiyomori in revenge for killing his father. After his attempts were thwarted by Sulu, Keiko announced that she was going to stand by her husband and care for him, as it was her duty. (TOS comic: "Giri")
Interests and hobbies
Edit
Natural sciences
Edit
Sulu had a keen interest in a variety of natural sciences including botany, zoology, parallel evolution, biochemistry, ethnology and entymology. (TOS - Star Trek II Short Stories short story: "Wild Card").
As an avid botanist, Sulu spent a lot of time collecting rare and delicate plants from all over Federation space. In 2277, Sulu made a special effort to beam down to planet Marris V and collect rare plant specimens from the surface. (TOS - Star Trek II Short Stories short story: "Wild Card")
During his off duty hours aboard the Enterprise, he often spent time in the ship's botanical gardens, tending for the plants. (TOS episode: "The Man Trap")
Martial arts
Edit
Sulu was encouraged by his parents to become well-rounded in active subjects as well as academic ones. Sulu began studying judo at the age of six, before moving on to other martial arts such as karate, kendo and eventually, jeet kune do. (TOS comic: "Who's Who in Star Trek 2")
Fencing
Edit
Sulu first became interested in fencing as a child after reading Victor Hugo's The Three Musketeers, at least, a dozen times. By the time he entered Starfleet Acacemy, Sulu was quite an adept fencer and once fought in an intercontinental fencing championship after winning a place on the Pan-Earth team. Sulu went on to win the Inner-Planets all-round fencing championship. (TOS comic: "Who's Who in Star Trek 2"; TOS novel: Enterprise: The First Adventure)
