Verad Kalon was an unjoined Trill and failed host candidate who briefly stole the Dax symbiont from Jadzia Dax in 2370. (DS9 episode: "Invasive Procedures")

Biography[]

Following the incident with Dax, Verad was sentenced to a year and a day at the mental ward of the Gheryzan Hospital. After serving his time and being declared cured, Verad emigrated off-world and found a job on the Federation outpost world of Shal Tul. There, he abducted a joined Trill named Duhan Vos, a member of the Trill Symbiosis Commission.

Verad stole the Vos symbiont, and after injecting Duhan with a drug acquired from Bethan Roa that allowed for the removal of the symbiont from the host, had his features surgically altered to match those of Duhan, allowing Verad to take over the identity of Duhan Vos.

Then he used the drug Roa provided to begin a black-market operation in which unjoined Trill could, for a short time, experience what it was like to be joined. He killed Bethan, and then used the Roa symbiont as a commodity in his scheme, passing him off from host to host for a fee.

Verad's operation was uncovered in 2372 by Ziranne Idaris, the sister of Jadzia Dax. Ziranne acquired the Roa symbiont from Verad and absconded with it back to Trill, where Jadzia was summoned. Jadzia, along with Captain Benjamin Sisko, uncovered Verad's identity and plan and delivered him to the authorities. (DS9 - The Lives of Dax short story: "Reflections")

First splinter timeline[]

In 2376, Verad, now believing that the unjoined majority were being oppressed by the joined minority, created a radical movement that unleashed a virus designed to kill all Trill symbionts and start a civil war on Trill, thus "freeing" Trill from an imagined symbiont dictatorship. When his plan was undone, Verad chose suicide over capture. (DS9 comic: "Divided We Fall")

MarinerConspiracies1 This character's death occurred in the First Splinter timeline. In the prime timeline, events unfolded differently, meaning this person might not have died at that point, or that they died in a different manner.

Despite Verad's death, a group of his followers, who became known as the Neo-Purists, used Verad's call of oppression as a rallying cry for the masses against the Trill government. The Neo-Purists were the cause of much civil unrest on the planet in the days and weeks following the revelation of the genetic connection between the Symbionts and the alien Parasites.
