Ensign Violet Bays was the seven foot tall, female conn and navigation officer on the USS Excelsior in 2294. She was one of the crew taken hostage by the Beta Prometheans.

Bays and the other female Excelsior crewmember Nora Schmidt who had been taken hostage by the Prometheans were separated from Captain Sulu and the male prisoners. The Prometheans attempted to sell the women into slavery, however the Excelsior crew was able to rescue the two women shortly afterward. (TOS novel: The Fearful Summons)
