Voyager 2 was a 20th century NASA space probe that visited Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune before leaving the Sol system on 5 November 2018 to become an interstellar probe.

History[]

NASA approved six Voyager series probes in May 1972. All probes in the series were built to virtually the same specifications, each consisting of 65 thousand individual parts. Those included a thermoelectric power generator, plasma and cosmic ray detectors, and a memory bank capable of holding 500 million bits. (Star Trek: The Magazine vol. 2, Issue 8: "Briefing: V'Ger")

Voyager 2 was launched 20 August 1977. On 9 July 1979, it made its closest approach to Jupiter. It photographed Saturn and several of its moons in 1981. (ST reference: Spaceflight Chronology, historical accounts)

The 21 January 2024 edition of the Los Angeles Times featured an article quoting Doctor Musa, chief engineer of the Argosy Foundation, about Voyager 1 and Voyager 2 having taken photos of Jupiter's moon Europa in the 1970s. (PIC episode: "Watcher")

In 2273, James T. Kirk showed NASA's records from the Starfleet archives to V'Ger's Ilia probe proving that Voyager 2 was launched from Earth. (Phase II episode: "In Thy Image")
